Plot summary
Searching for a clean-cut American husband, Joyce McKinney meets Kirk Anderson, a young Mormon preparing for his religious mission, and she says the two fall in love and become engaged. McKinney, a former beauty queen from North Carolina who reports an IQ of 168, distrusts his church, which she calls a cult that brainwashed him. When Anderson is sent to England, she believes the elders have separated them deliberately. She recruits a pilot, a hired bodyguard and a friend and flies to England on what she calls a rescue mission, allegedly showing them handcuffs, chloroform and a fake handgun. The pilot and the bodyguard, fearing a crime, fly home, leaving McKinney and her friend to carry on. Anderson is reported missing on 14 September 1977.

- In November 2011, Joyce McKinney sued Errol Morris and producer Mark Lipson in Los Angeles County Superior Court, saying they misled her into believing she was being interviewed for a television series about innocent people ruined by the paparazzi, and that the film defamed her as "crazy, a sex offender, an S&M prostitute, and/or a rapist."
- In January 2016, McKinney sued Morris again, claiming the film misrepresented her and that he and his associates broke into her home, stole case-related items and threatened the life of her service dog to get her to sign release papers; Morris said the case was dismissed as frivolous.
