Plot summary

South Central Los Angeles stands five miles from Hollywood and twenty from Anaheim and Orange County, but the young men raised there grow up without the opportunities those places hold. Former gang members say they were turned away from groups like the Boy Scouts, and that neighborhood cliques such as the Slausons, the Dell Vikings and the Gladiators gave them the identity and protection they could not find elsewhere, while also standing up to white gangs that came into black neighborhoods. The Los Angeles Police Department under Chief William Parker answered with hardline tactics that restricted residents to certain blocks, and when the region's factories and jobs vanished in the 1960s, the ground was set for the Crips and the Bloods, who have taken more than 15,000 lives between them. Former members now work at truce talks and intervention.
