Plot summary
The global financial crisis of 2008 is the subject, a meltdown that cost more than $20 trillion and pushed millions of people out of their homes and jobs. The account moves through five parts, starting with Iceland's shift to deregulation in 2000 and the privatization of its banks, then a decade of deregulation in the United States, the growth of derivatives trading, and the bundling of mortgages into products that rating agencies graded as safe. Interviewees include financiers, politicians, journalists and academics, who describe subprime and predatory lending, home loans that borrowers could never repay, and conflicts of interest among regulators, rating agencies and academic economists who also worked as paid consultants.
