Plot summary
Kind and hardworking Nastenka lives on a mountain farm with her father, her cruel stepmother and her stepsister Marfushka, who is rude and lazy. One morning before sunrise the stepmother orders Nastenka outside to finish knitting a sock, and Nastenka begs the sun to wait. In a neighboring village Ivan sets out to see the world. Bandits accost him on the road and he outsmarts them. Father Mushroom gives Ivan a bow and arrows and asks Ivan to bow in thanks; Ivan refuses. At a lake Ivan meets Nastenka and her dog and is lovestruck. He proposes, and to prove he is worthy he aims at a mother bear with cubs. Nastenka stops him, and Father Mushroom casts a spell that turns Ivan into a bear.
