Plot summary

Marlon Rivers has made his name at a hedge fund with Monte Carlo mathematical methods. On the morning he quits, he meets Margot Marshall, a woman newly arrived in New York from Los Angeles, and weighs whether to follow the encounter or keep to the life he has built alone. Vlad Rosos, the hedge fund manager, and the circle around him have their own plans for their gifted analyst, who knows about dealings the firm keeps from view. Larry Victor, Marlon's uncle, and Bob, Larry's backgammon partner and Vlad's numbers man, are close at hand. Margot has come to the city for documents held by a local bank that bear on the death of her great-grandmother, the silent film star Margot Beauregard.
