Plot summary
Adam Carlson works as a news reporter in a small Alaska town in 1988, near Point Barrow. Three gray whales are trapped in the Arctic Circle as ice forms quickly around them. Adam gives the whales names: Fred for the father, Wilma for the mother, Bamm-Bamm for the infant. He asks Rachel, his former girlfriend and a Greenpeace volunteer, to help. A native Alaskan boy joins the effort, and together they begin rallying the community to save the whale family.

- The film is based on Operation Breakthrough, the real 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, and on Tom Rose's 1989 book about it.
- In Big Miracle the Soviet icebreaker is modeled on an Arktika-class nuclear ship considerably larger than the Admiral Makarov, the 1975-built diesel-electric icebreaker used in the actual rescue. Live footage of the 2007-built 50 Let Pobedy keeps the Murmansk Shipping Company logo, but the vessel's name and atom symbol were airbrushed out.
