Plot summary
In a small South Dakota town, Cal Starr watches Westerns on television, studies Native American culture and comes to believe he is Sitting Bull reborn. Days earlier, Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress who stutters and dreams of country music, finds a napkin note naming a time and place for a meeting about a large sum of money, and Lefty Ledbetter, a veteran with little luck, listens in. Roy Lee Dean, who trades in stolen Native artifacts, hires Dillon MacIntosh and Fun Dave to take a Lakota ghost shirt from the house of Pendleton Duvall, a wealthy local man. Lefty and Penny Jo set out to gain the shirt for themselves, and Cal's sister Mandy drives off with it.
