Plot summary

The Taylors have just moved into a large house in the countryside, miles from any city. Helen is a doctor and Greg an academic; with them are teenage Zoe, baby Mia and Kai, their adopted pre-teen son. Then the economy collapses: food runs short, schools close, looting spreads and martial law follows. At the local market, its shelves picked bare, Helen helps a frightened pregnant woman gather medical supplies. An armed boy, Matty, later comes looking for her. He lives next door with his father Winter and the woman from the market, Amber, who is bleeding. Matty brings Helen and Greg into an underground bunker built as a fort, and a reluctant Winter allows Helen to treat Amber. After the Taylor house is looted, the family asks Winter for shelter.
