Plot summary
Anju, a woman who has suffered a string of pregnancy losses and cannot conceive after a medical problem, deals with her grief quietly. In the mountain village of Kavantha, Stephen turns up as an inspector of roadwork for a road that would join the village to the world beyond, while his true purpose is an inquiry into a child who has gone missing. There he meets Ammini Amma, a woman who keeps to herself and looks after Kunhi, a girl who cannot hear. Ammini Amma says the 2018 floods took her daughter and son-in-law and that Kunhi has been in her care since. The two keep apart from the village; the villagers watch over them, but Ammini Amma seldom allows others to grow close to the girl, and she earns their living as a daily wage laborer.
