Plot summary
Yolandi Von Riesen is a single mother, and her writing has not brought her success. Her sister Elfrieda, called Elf, is a concert pianist. The two grew up Mennonite and left that strict upbringing behind. A call brings Yolandi the news that Elf has attempted suicide. Yolandi wants to support her sister, but Elf asks her to take her to Switzerland so that she can die there, and Yolandi, who thinks her sister's life is a good one, grows angry.
