Plot summary

Born in 1560 into the noble Báthory family, Erzebet Bathory is raised by her parents to accept cruelty. As a teenager she is impregnated by a peasant lover and made to watch him tortured and executed; her mother takes the baby away. She is married to Count Ferenc Nadasdy and bears three children, and he dies of a disease contracted abroad. At a ball she meets Istvan Thurzo, the 21-year-old son of Count Gyorgy Thurzo, and falls in love. His father forces the young man to end the relationship and marry a Danish merchant's daughter. Erzebet, 39, blames their age difference. After a servant's blood splashes her, she becomes convinced that virgins' blood holds eternal youth and beauty.
