Biography

Prunella Ransome was an English actress of television and film. She trained at Elmhurst School for Dance, began performing as a teenager, and made her West End debut in the musical Do Re Mi. A producer noticed her in The Matchgirls, staged at Leatherhead and then transferred to the West End, and a screen test followed that won her the second female lead in Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), along with a Golden Globe nomination. She played the female lead in Alfred the Great (1969), after which she worked mainly in television, including the serial Kenilworth and major roles in Warship, A Horseman Riding By and Dangerous Knowledge. Her later films included Man in the Wilderness (1971) and the cult horror Who Can Kill a Child? (1976), and she appeared in the miniseries Seagull Island. She retired after Sorrell and Son in 1984, though she made occasional guest appearances on television in the 1990s. She died in 2002.
