Plot summary

Oliver Blake, a survivalist wary of the government, has raised his son Moon in a hidden cave in the woods of Alabama. A leg wound goes untreated because Oliver refuses medical help, and Oliver dies. Eleven-year-old Moon is told to leave by himself for the wild lands of Alaska. Constable Sanders, the local lawman, finds the boy carrying his father's guns. He mistreats Moon and has him committed to Mr. Gene's Pinson home for boys, to stay until he reaches majority age on an assault charge. There Moon befriends Kit, a shy, sickly boy, and Hal, who appears to be a bully.
