Plot summary

Yukito Kunisaki travels from town to town as a puppeteer, searching for the girl in the sky, a figure from a tale passed down in his family and one his mother spent her life hunting. He arrives in Kami, a coastal town, hoping to earn money at the coming summer festival. Misuzu Kamio, a student there, has chosen the town's history for her summer project and found a book about Kannabi no Mikoto, the winged figure behind the festival. After crashing her bike on the beach, she meets Yukito and, learning he has nowhere to stay, invites him to her home until the festival. Her aunt, Haruko Kamio, drinks with him, and in the days that follow he walks the town with Misuzu while she gathers material for her project.
