Plot summary
Shinko Aoki is nine years old in the spring of 1955, living in Mitajiri, a town in Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture. Her grandfather, Kotaro, tells her about the place a thousand years earlier, when it was the province of Suō and the princess Nagiko Kiyohara lived there, and Shinko finds she can picture that world. She believes that ability comes from a cowlick on her forehead that she calls her mai mai. When Kiiko Shimazu transfers into her class, a quiet girl from Tokyo who is grieving her mother, Shinko takes her along into those daydreams of the past. The two join the village boys in a group they call the Destiny Squad, led by fourteen-year-old Tatsuyoshi, and they build a dam in the creek. Shinko and Kiiko sense that Princess Nagiko is lonely and longs for a friend.
