Plot summary
Nora Valentino is the matriarch of the Valentino family, a middle class clan in upstate New York. Their stone cutting business is failing, so money is tight in the winter of 2002. Rivalries and resentments run through the household, and one daughter, Samantha, is absent; she has moved from Rochester to Manhattan. Nora keeps up a cheerful front, though the family knows how fragile she is emotionally and works to shield her. The Valentinos also carry a secret they have kept hidden.
