Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe (1990)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Much of Abraxas was shot in strong winds at temperatures as low as minus 30, with nights lasting about 14 hours and holes cut into solid ice to stage some sequences. Jesse Ventura hesitated to walk into the cold water but ultimately did it.
- Grace Jones and Mr. T were hoped to appear as inhabitants of the planet Sargacia: Jones was to film her short role in Toronto and Mr. T was in talks to travel to Thornbury for a cameo. Neither was in the finished film.
- Jim Belushi's cameo, in a role reminiscent of his part in The Principal, was done as a courtesy to his then-girlfriend, co-star Marjorie Bransfield.
- Wrestler Jesse Ventura was paid the equivalent of US$250,000, then a hefty fee for an independent film, and took a leave of absence from his announcing job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to appear; he also got his son Tyrel cast as one of Tommy's bullies.
- The band The Prime Movers did not know its song "Strong as I Am" was used in the film and contacted the filmmakers, with help from performance rights company BMI, to sort out the legal details.
- Ventura's election as governor of Minnesota brought the film fresh attention: paired with Predator, it gave its name to Jesse Fest: Governor of Minnesota/Guardian of the Universe, a double bill hosted by the University of Minnesota Film Society at the Bell Auditorium in Minneapolis in December 1998.
