Plot summary
Emilie Thompson takes charge of her nephew J.T. and her niece Alanna after their mother, Berry, is hospitalized following an overdose. The children are threatened with foster care, so Emilie flees with them rather than let that happen. The three arrive in the town of Bethlehem, Rhode Island, shortly before Christmas, with the authorities left behind for the time being. Keeping the family together would take a miracle. A guardian angel who takes on various earthly guises is at work, and the townspeople are friendlier than the newcomers expect. One kindness follows another, and that help gives the trio a chance at happiness.
