Plot summary

A Soviet clay animation in three separate parts. The first tells children about painting with examples from children's drawings: a landscape, a still life and a portrait. Comic verses and songs accompany it. In the second, a grandpa and his nephew play a game in which they open and shut their eyes, and each time they look they see something new. The third parodies the old fable of the crow and the fox; the two storytellers who retell it cannot remember the plot and try to recall it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A Plasticine Crow (1981)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Soviet officials wanted to ban Plasticine Crow for what they called "ideological nonsense", but Xeniya Marinina, head of the Kinopanorama television programme, and its host, film director Eldar Ryazanov, got the cartoon shown on Soviet Central Television anyway, bypassing the censors.
  • Making Plasticine Crow took about 800 kg of Soviet plasticine, which had to be dyed because its colours had withered.
  • The third part's music ran 8 minutes instead of the animation's 5, so Tatarskiy adjusted the recording's playback speed, the same technique once used to restore a gramophone recording of Lenin's voice, giving the song its recognisable sound.
  • The music of the third part borrows heavily from the Irish folk song Whiskey in the Jar, and the beginning of its second verse is based on George Harrison's song My Sweet Lord.
  • Plasticine Crow is divided into three independent parts (Picture, Game and But maybe, but maybe...) and was Russia's first claymation film.
