Plot summary
Alisa Seleznyova travels with her father, Professor Seleznyov, and the pilot Zelyony aboard the Pegas, sent from Earth to gather new animal species for the Moscow Zoo. On the Moon the professor meets Gromozeka, an alien archaeologist, who points the crew toward the Planet of Two Captains, a museum built around Captains Kim and Buran, who circled the universe in the ship Blue Seagull. Doctor Verkhovtsev, the museum's director, keeps away from Gromozeka and refuses to let the travelers read the captains' diaries, which would show where the rare animals live. On the planet Bluk the crew hears of Chatterbirds, birds that copied human speech and flew unaided in open space, and a local man gives them one to keep.
