Plot summary
Paintings and memories follow one another rather than a single storyline. A little grey wolf from a lullaby keeps appearing, watching the people and scenes that surface: a poet over his paper waiting for inspiration, a washerwoman bending to her trough, a fisherman carrying his catch home, a boy sharing an apple with ravens. Memories of war and of the Soviet Union run through the sequences, with dancers and soldiers, a train and apples returning again and again. Beside the world of wonders, in which the trees bear ripe apples in winter, ordinary life continues, and cars stream along noisy highways.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's original title was The Little Grey Wolf Will Come, but Soviet censors rejected it, so director Yuri Norstein's film reached audiences as Tale of Tales.
- A traditional Russian lullaby was the film's most important musical inspiration, heard in both instrumental and vocal form, and several of its situations and the little grey wolf character were drawn from that lullaby.
- Australian electronic duo The Presets paid homage to the Soviet film in the music video for their song "Girl and the Sea", from their album Beams.
