Plot summary
Mathieu Vasseur writes novels that publishers keep turning down while he works for a house clearance business. Among the belongings of a soldier who has recently died he finds a diary written during the Algerian War, and he publishes it as his own. The book brings him acclaim, and at an event celebrating its release he meets Alice Fursac, a book critic. Three years on he has written nothing more, and the money from the first book and from an advance is gone. At a book signing a mysterious older man claims he can prove Mathieu is a fraud, while Stanislas Richer, a friend of Alice's family, doubts his talent.
