Plot summary
In 1880s Paris, Eugénie, a young woman from a wealthy bourgeois family, carries an extraordinary gift: she hears and sees the dead. Voices and visions of the dead put her into trances she cannot hold back. When her family discovers her condition, her father and brother have her committed against her will to the clinic at La Pitié Salpêtrière, the Paris hospital where the renowned professor Jean-Martin Charcot oversees the department for hysterics. Eugénie cannot leave, and she endures mistreatment and a medical staff that regards its women patients with misogynistic disdain. One of the hospital's nurses helps her plot an escape.
