Plot summary
Russian security officers pull Mathieu Roussel from his home in Irkutsk, Siberia, and charge him with spreading child pornography online and molesting his own daughter. Roussel heads the local Alliance française, where he promotes the French language and francophone culture; he is held in custody under Article 242 of the Russian criminal code while investigators assemble the file against him. It is kompromat, material meant to paint him as a sexual deviant, down to pornography planted on his computer. Other prisoners hear the charges and beat him. His lawyer works to have him moved from jail to house arrest under surveillance. Isolated, he finds that the French authorities cannot help him and that disproving the case looks impossible.

- Kompromat was planned as a film about the real kompromat case of Yoann Barbereau, but the production could not obtain rights to his story and instead created a fictional film loosely based on it. Barbereau was also the director of the Alliance française in Irkutsk and was charged with disseminating child pornography and abusing his daughter, before escaping prison.
- Filming on Kompromat was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic: the crew could not meet in person to discuss the filming, nor have a drink or a meal together. Director Jérôme Salle said this helped with the development of the character of Mathieu and the film.
- The production of Kompromat was based in Lithuania rather than Russia, as it was too risky to shoot in Russia.
