Plot summary
Rick Monroe is a jock at a community college in Titusville, Florida. When he cracks a joke at the close of his final report, his speech professor, Faye Hanlon, is unamused and decides to fail him, making him repeat the course. At home, her marriage to Whitney Hanlon has gone flat; he is a rocket scientist who lost his job at NASA. Her free-spirited sister Patsy, visiting from Chicago, takes her out to a male strip club, where a performer billed as Ricky the Rocket is Rick Monroe, who dances there on the side to pay his fees. Spotting Faye in the audience, he gives her a lap dance and kisses her. The next day the two meet again at a school function, and Rick, hoping for another shot at his final, begins flirting.

- Bryan Adams co-wrote and performed "Heaven" for the soundtrack; re-released in 1985, it became his first American number one on the Billboard Hot 100, after first charting high on Mainstream Rock when the film came out.
- The soundtrack's "Obsession", performed by its co-writers Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres, was covered by the band Animotion on their self-titled album and became a top ten hit in early 1985.
- Screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury said producers made numerous changes to her script, while director John G. Avildsen blamed the film's incoherence on his wish for a story about marital forgiveness after infidelity, scenes Tewkesbury could not write.
