Plot summary
Alfie Byrne works the buses of Dublin in 1963, keeping his homosexuality to himself while his sister Lily shares his home and hopes to see him settled with a woman. On his routes he recites poetry and lines from Oscar Wilde for the regular passengers. His ambition for the year is an amateur staging of Wilde's Salome in the church hall, and he tells the priest the play concerns John the Baptist to secure the room. A young rider, Adele Rice, becomes his Salome, while he presses his driver Robbie Fay to take the part of John the Baptist and casts a local butcher as Herod. The butcher finds the play offensive, and rehearsals meet resistance.
