Anyone who dwells there must step into the arena and leap into the hands of a trapeze artist, either to die or to go back to life. Ryan, silent since his father's death, can speak again in this place, and there he meets his Grandpa Randolph, whose Alzheimer's disease had cut him off from his family, and Melanie Lewis, a girl his own age who has lived in the Factory for years.
