Plot summary
The Riggs family's apple farm is barely making ends meet, and John, a widower, is raising his two children on it, eight-year-old Jessica and her older brother Steve, with help from his sister-in-law, Sarah. Walking home from a school Christmas pageant, Jessica sees a plastic reindeer fall from a decoration strung over the main street and takes it for Prancer, the reindeer from the poem A Visit from St. Nicholas. After she and her friend Carol knock down flowers at the house of Mrs. McFarland, a widow who keeps to herself, Jessica meets a live reindeer in the woods. Injured, it turns up in the barn, and she hides it in a shed and nurses it, calling a veterinarian for help.
