- Steven J. Kung based Jack Yang's character GQ Chi on an Asian actor friend who had landed a major role in Broadway theater but still struggled to find steady work; Kung called that difficulty "emblematic of how Asian actors are treated in general."
- Kung wrote A Leading Man after seeing repeated stereotypical portrayals of Asian Americans, citing media backlash against Jeremy Lin, the "appallingly offensive" stereotypes on NBC's Outsourced, and a SAG-AFTRA report that found Asian Americans underserved in entertainment.
