Biography

Virginia Welles was an American film actress who was born in Wausau, Wisconsin. A talent agent noticed her during a Hollywood visit, but she chose to finish a college drama course first, training in drama under actress Maude Adams. Paramount signed her in 1945 after agent William Meiklejohn brought her screen test to the studio's executives. Her film debut came that year in Kiss and Tell, and she followed it with To Each His Own (1946). She was known for appearances in Shirley Temple films, among them A Kiss for Corliss (1949), and she also had a role in Ladies' Man. Welles later acted on stage in San Francisco and stepped away from show business for a time, working in shorts and television without major roles. She returned in 1956 opposite Mickey Rooney in Francis in the Haunted House. She died in 2002.
