Plot summary
In Hopewell, Georgia, the attorney general Johnathan Dupree is campaigning for re-election when Hattie Mae comes to him with a bundle of letters. They are addressed to Leanne J. Harper, and she asks him to find out what happened in 1947 to her son Bayou, whose given name was Horace John Boyd. The letters carry the story back to Bayou's youth. He grows up in a musical household, belittled by his father, who favors his older brother. Leanne, an educated girl the townspeople call Bucket because her mother went away, asks him to call her by her real name. The two meet in secret, and she teaches him to read. Her abusive grandfather threatens him if he comes near her again.
