Plot summary
Rebecca, a Jewish British girl, is mourning her mother's death when she and her father Michael move from Britain to Israel. They settle into a West Jerusalem villa her grandfather bought from the state of Israel in the 1960s. In the garden Rebecca rescues an old doll from a well. In the house she encounters Rasha, a Palestinian girl who appears as a ghost, visible only to Rebecca. During the 1948 Palestine war, Rasha's family was driven out of that home.

- Director Muayad Alayan said the film had to be shot incognito, with the crew claiming it was for documentary purposes, because shooting openly would have complicated getting a license from Israeli authorities.
- Although the story is set in a house in West Jerusalem, the house was filmed in East Jerusalem, because the director believed it would have been difficult to convince tenants in the western part to shoot a film narrating the Palestinian history of it.
- Director Muayad Alayan's own family was among the roughly 750,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled during the 1948 Nakba and were not allowed to return, and that history inspired the film; he had the idea in 2009 while passing through his family's former West Jerusalem neighborhood and seeing a newly immigrant Jewish family moving into an old house.
- A House in Jerusalem is the first ever joint production between the United Kingdom and Palestine, a first for both countries' film industries.
