Plot summary
Arturo Vannino works as a carpenter in Florence and hopes to become a great writer. He has a talent for fantasy stories for children, and Italian critics snub him for them. He refuses to give up and sends his proofs to a well-known Florentine publisher. His family has no money left, because an uncle went bankrupt with a string of useless shops. The publisher is excited by the stories, and the book comes out under the title The Fish in Love. Arturo gains celebrity and wealth, but the fame leaves him feeling suffocated. While promoting the book he falls for Matilde Ventura, who is engaged to a pompous man from Bergamo.
