Plot summary
Marco Tullio Sperelli is a professor of Italian for children from Liguria, in northern Italy. A failure at the Ministry of Education sends him not to another northern town but to a similar-sounding place near Naples. The school there has students, teachers and parents who meet the poverty of the south with resignation and practicality. He judges that attitude unworthy of the values and schooling children should receive. Most of the pupils stay away from class because they must work to help support their families. Marco Tullio asks to be transferred back north. Raffaele, registered in his class, turns up only to bring other children into the gangster life.
