Plot summary
Rosalba Barletta, a housewife from Pescara, is stranded during a family vacation when her family's bus leaves her at a highway café. Her husband Mimmo is controlling, and she chooses not to sit and wait for him. She hitchhikes her way home, then impulsively detours to Venice. There her money runs out, and she takes lodgings with Fernando Girasole, a restaurant maître d'hôtel from Iceland who speaks a refined Italian. She befriends Grazia, a masseuse living nearby, and takes a job with Fermo, an elderly anarchist who runs a flower shop.
