Plot summary
Billy Ford lives alone in a secluded cabin beside a pond, a widower with a settled routine. One night Nick Wolfe, bleeding from a gunshot wound, breaks in with a gun and orders Billy to hide him from the police. Nick needs somewhere to lie low after an armed robbery, and the money was meant for a private investigator he hired to find the father he never knew. His wife, Jean, is pregnant and believes he will be a good father, a confidence Nick does not share. Billy treats the wound, and as Nick recovers the two fall into conversations that grow personal, with Billy addressing him as son.
