Plot summary
Bitter and grieving for her dead seven-year-old son, Sophia Howard takes a remote house in Wales and brings in Joseph Solomon, a short-tempered occultist, to lead her through a rite dictated by The Book of Abramelin. The work is grueling and runs for months, and its aim is to summon her guardian angel and then ask it to speak with her son. Solomon warns that once they begin, leaving the house before the ritual is finished puts them in grave peril, and that over the months they will face real demons and angels. Sophia agrees, and complies with the dozens of painful exercises he sets her.
