Plot summary
Eleven years have passed since the Boyajian family learned that their son John, eighteen, was killed in the Gulf War shortly before Christmas, and they have not celebrated the holiday since. Their daughter may face a life-threatening illness, and George Boyajian decides the family should celebrate Christmas once more. Carol, his wife, refuses. George keeps watch over the town's veterans memorial, where teenagers accost him until a hitchhiker called Matthew scares them off. Matthew says he served in the Gulf in the same regiment as John.
