Plot summary
In London on Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly moneylender, has grown bitter toward Christmas and the people around him. Mr. Smythe, newly widowed, and his daughter Grace ask him to cover the cost of Mrs. Smythe's funeral, and he refuses, speaking up for the prisons and workhouses instead. He grants his clerk Bob Cratchit, the usual target of his cruelty, Christmas Day off, then declines his nephew Fred's invitation to dinner. On his way home he turns away a newspaper seller, a lamp-lighter and an old blind woman who ask for his help. In his house that night, the ghost of his dead business partner Jacob Marley warns him to mend his ways and tells him three spirits will visit him before morning.

- The film departs from Dickens' novella by showing Ebenezer Scrooge's father, John William Scrooge, sentenced to debtors' prison while his helpless family looks on, a scene inspired by events from Charles Dickens' own childhood.
- Jacob Marley's visit became a large-scale production number, "Link By Link", with a half-dozen singing, dancing spirits built from layers of makeup and special effects, among them Scrooge and Marley's old colleague Mr. Haynes, whose skeleton is charred for being "mean to the bone".
- The opening number, "Jolly Good Time", is a more jovial reworking that folds the stage version's first two numbers, "The Years Are Passing By" and "Jolly, Rich, and Fat", into one song.
