Plot summary
Caroline de Bièvre is a sixteen-year-old daughter of the French nobility who lives with her family in their château, where she keeps a secret hiding place in the attic. Gaston de Sallanches is a handsome rogue, and the household expects him to propose to Caroline's older, plainer sister rather than to Caroline herself. He comes to Caroline instead of her sister, joins her in that hiding place, and Caroline, infatuated, starts an affair with him. Livio, a dull but sincere suitor, courts her at the same time, and she keeps him at a distance because she is in love with Gaston.
