Plot summary
Ryan is a misfit with a bad reputation at a public high school. He rescues Barret Michaelson, a newcomer whom his new classmates often bully, during a beating in the men's locker room. Barret has no other friends at school. The two grow close and pass much of their time in philosophical conversation. Ryan is a misanthropic existentialist given to violence.

- Vincent Pereira, who directed A Better Place, grew up with co-producer Kevin Smith in Leonardo, New Jersey. The two had worked together at the convenience store and video store that inspired Smith's film Clerks.
- Brian Lynch, a friend of Pereira, was a production assistant on A Better Place and has a small role in the film; he went on to become a screenwriter for major animation films.
