Plot summary
After bankruptcy, William Ziel takes his family to start over on the farm he inherited from his father. The house has no electricity and no water, and his attempts to get the generator running come to nothing, so the first night passes by candlelight and fire. His daughter Mary loses her way in the forest, and a stranger, Lazarus, leads her home, saying he once worked for William's grandfather. Sarah, William's wife, dismisses him, but Lazarus repairs the generator, and William offers him work on the farm and the shed as a room. Lazarus is an old man who gathers souls and seeks atonement for trading his own daughter's soul.
