Plot summary
At eight years old, Pat Johnson sees 2001: A Space Odyssey and starts making special effects movies with an 8mm camera in his backyard in Wadsworth, Illinois. His father later leaves the family. Pat attempts sequels to Planet of the Apes and Jaws, and as a high school senior he still has not finished a film, to the frustration of Bill Holmes, his best friend and lead actor. He reads magazines about the effects artist Douglas Trumbull and shoots a story about an alien visiting his town. He dates Linda, who works in the school cafeteria and is reading Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 novel, while her protective friend Tony dislikes Pat and Bill. Pat's mother phones Herb Lightman, the editor of American Cinematographer, who agrees to bring him to Hollywood and try to meet Trumbull.
