Plot summary
A doctor has explained the final steps of Ray's transition, and the sixteen-year-old is ready to begin testosterone shots and to change schools. Ray lives with his mother, Maggie, his grandmother, Dolly, and Dolly's partner, Frances. Dolly would prefer that Ray simply live as a lesbian, while Maggie understands that her son is a transgender man. Both parents must sign a consent form before the shots can begin, and Maggie hesitates over a decision that cannot be undone. Ray's father, Craig, has been absent from the family, so Maggie tries to find him, and when she does, he wants time to think.

- The film drew controversy for casting cisgender actress Fanning as a trans male character, Ray; after a 2015 Refinery29 interview in which director Dellal said the part "is a girl and she is a girl who is presenting in a very ineffectual way as a boy", the trans community accused her of misgendering.
- In April 2016, Dellal posted pictures on Instagram indicating that she was re-editing the film, and the score by Brook was replaced by West Dylan Thordson's.
