Plot summary
In 1242, the Mongol army that has swept through Hungary arrives at the walls of Esztergom, the one castle still blocking its path into the rest of Europe. Batu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, leads the troops. The men holding Esztergom look to Eusebius, the canon of the city, and to Captain Simon, a Spanish mercenary, as they prepare for the fight ahead. Their preparations are interrupted by Cardinal Cesareani, the Papal Legate, who reaches the castle as the Mongols observe their Lunar New Year. The cardinal's arrival and the mystical practices Eusebius follows give the defenders a faint hope of holding out.
