Plot summary

Rusty Russell, a veteran and onetime orphan, moves his wife Juanita and their daughter to Fort Worth, Texas, during the Great Depression. He joins the staff of the Masonic Home for Orphans, where he teaches science and math and also takes on the football team. The home answers to Warden Frank Wynn, who uses the boys as labor in his own printing press and leaves them with little schooling or discipline. Backed by Doc Hall, the home's physician, Rusty builds a team from boys who own no equipment and play barefoot. He draws up unusual formations, among them a spread offense, to offset their size. Nicknamed the Mighty Mites, the boys begin to improve, though Wynn resists the effort and the surrounding town doubts them.
