Plot summary
On Floreana Island in the Galápagos, European settlers try to build lives outside society. Friedrich Ritter works on his manifesto while Dore Strauch hopes meditation will cure her multiple sclerosis. Margret and Heinz Wittmer arrive from Germany with Heinz's young son, Harry, and Margret learns she is pregnant. The Wittmers prove earnest, capable settlers. Then Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn comes ashore, calling herself a baroness, with two devoted lovers, Robert and Rudolph, and an Ecuadorian servant, Manuel. She announces a plan to build a lavish hotel on the island and sets up camp near the house the Wittmers have built.
