Plot summary
By 2044 the population has been genetically engineered for permanent happiness, and because sorrow is gone the feeling fades into a numbness that only pain can break. Jack, once a neurosurgeon, deals in substances that produce it. A stranger comes to his door with one videotape left by Ed, the father Jack lost long ago, the first of ten in which Ed set down his life and his hunt for what he called the Grand Conspiracy, which may explain what happened to Jack's world. Jack begins his own investigation, needing the remaining nine tapes to complete the puzzle. He meets Lisa in a strip club and finds her as conflicted and lonely as he is.
