Plot summary
Erin travels with her boyfriend Crispian to the rural Missouri home of his parents, Paul and Aubrey Davison, where the grown children and their partners have gathered for a family reunion. Crispian's brothers Drake and Felix, Drake's wife Kelly, Felix's girlfriend Zee, and his sister Aimee with her boyfriend Tariq fill the house. Crispian tells Erin that his father once worked in marketing for a defense contract company and that the family is wealthy. At dinner, old rivalries surface and the table turns argumentative. An arrow smashes through the window glass, then more follow, sending everyone to the floor. The family finds the phone signals jammed, and masked figures are outside in the dark.

- Barrett wrote the film after Wingard told him he wanted to do a home invasion movie, the only kind of film that still truly frightened him. Barrett's script drew on Agatha Christie mysteries, screwball comedies and chamber mysteries, and he later realized A Bay of Blood had probably been in the back of his mind.
- Wingard credited the film's humor to Barrett's sense of humor and cynicism, and some of the dinner conversations were improvised, based on real-life experiences the filmmakers had with family members.
