Plot summary

Char lives in a North Dublin housing estate with her mother Angela and her grandmother Rita. Rita's health is poor, Angela stays in bed, and the house has little food. Char is bright but an outsider at her Catholic girls' school, where other students bully her. Her uncle Aaron lives nearby. Driving Char to school one morning, Angela says she cannot keep going. The car is found abandoned. The police can do little. Days later Angela comes back, cheerful and cooking, her depression gone. Rita distrusts the change.
